If you are in Virginia Beach and want to learn how to defend yourself, even if you don’t have a gun, then you’ve come to the right place!!!
The plain and simple truth is, self-defense or self-protection has a lot more to it than merely owning a gun. Many people falsely believe that just by merely owning a gun that somehow they are safe from whatever harm the world can throw at them. This is simply not true. It requires a more complete, holistic, 360 degree approach for someone to really become a protector of themselves and those they love.

Before we get into the Top 3 Self Defense Classes Without a Gun in VA Beach, let’s answer some questions that we as a Self-Protection training organization most commonly get asked.
But First Let us Introduce Ourselves
Intuitive Self Protection was created in 2019 and is the civilian training arm of NLB Tactical which has been training Military, Law Enforcement, and Executive Protection Professionals (mainly at the elite special teams level) via Government contract since 1998. To date we have trained well over 22,000 Operators who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our streets and our Country every day.
Our fighting system that we teach is what we refer as a “closed loop” system. What that means is whether you’re fighting with a pistol, rifle, knife, or empty hands, our system allows you to seamlessly transition from each of those platforms and give you the ability to stay in the fight. The philosophy of our system is “simplicity over complexity” and the techniques can be taught and learned by nearly everyone.
Bottom line, we teach people how to survive real world threats so they can come home to their families. We have built a reputation as one of the top self-protection, combative, and tactical firearms training companies in the country and we are headquartered right here in Virginia Beach, VA.
Commonly Asked Self-Defense Questions:
What is the best weapon for self-defense?
This is such a great question and one that we get asked quiet a lot. The answer is probably not what you would expect. The best weapon you can have for self-defense will always be your mind. The things we carry on our person to help with self-protection like knives, guns, pepper spray, and flashlights are merely tools. Your mind will always be the final and ultimate weapon… everything else is supplemental.
What is the best self-defense tool?
Again, this is a great question we get a lot and again the answer probably isn’t what you’d expect. The best self-defense tool you can have is your situational awareness. Being aware of your surroundings and being “switched on” with your head out of your phone will keep you out of more trouble than you can imagine.
Criminals are like any other predator out in the wild. They prey on weak, unaware, and easy targets. So, the more aware you are of your surroundings and the more you project confidence and strength the far less likely you become a target.
What are alternatives to guns for self-defense?
Aside from your mindset and situational awareness there are a number of less than lethal self-defense tools on the market today. These tools can range from anything from pepper spray to a stick you carry when you go out walking. It is still a good idea to seek training for some of these tools such as a kubatons or mace. Not a requirement but a good idea.
One of the best non-lethal self-defense tools you can carry pretty much anywhere is a good strong tactical flashlight. Flashlights are a super handy multi use tool that have the ability to temporarily blind your attacker (in a dark environment) and can be used as a blunt force object if need be. Plus, no one will bat an eye if they see you walking around with a flashlight in your hand. Definitely can’t say that about a gun.
Are Self-Defense classes effective?
The short answer is yes. However, this is a somewhat loaded question as it greatly depends on the instructor and training organization. There is no such thing as the “ultimate failproof fighting system”. If there was we would all know what it is and only study that.
Because of this, the Self-Defense training you receive should be grounded in reality and should be effective on most people, in most situations, most of the time. And, most of all, it should be pressure tested with an intensity appropriate to the students skill level. It shouldn’t be so easy that it’s fake or builds a false sense of abilities but also shouldn’t be so hard as to destroy a students confidence. It’s a fine line pushing just enough to build growth and a good instructor should be able to do that.
A good training organization should develop it’s students both mentally as well as physically to be able to “flip the switch” and effectively defend themselves when all other options to defuse, distract, and deescalate the situation have been exhausted.

3 - Trauma Management (Medical)
This maybe somewhat of an unexpected wildcard but the reality is you are way more likely to have to render aid to someone than you are to have to defend yourself against them. Whether you are Stop the Bleed Certified or have gone through Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) or are even a healthcare professional such as EMS or ER Nurse the ability to render aid and save lives is a far more useful skill than being able to beat someone up or even shoot them. Even if you just have Basic CPR training that could literally make a difference between life and death.
Trauma Management is an Intuitive Self Protection (ISP) specialty course in collaboration with Defender Series Training (DFT) and taught by Lead instructor Troy V who is an active S.W.A.T Operator and Instructor. This course goes well beyond your normal First Aid or Stop the Bleed Course and will have you leaving with applicable skills you can use to save a life that day!!

2 - Defensive Measures - Empty Hands Combatives
Having the ability to defend yourself with just your hands is an often under emphasized aspect of self-defense with firearms tending to be over emphasized. In our courses we teach the 4 Domains of Combat which is basically a sliding scale of lethality based on a situation you may find yourself in.
The 4 Domains of Combat
Situational Awareness: Sound familiar? Bad guys and self-defense encounters don’t just pop out of the sky. Keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Many encounters can be avoided by merely seeing them coming before it happens.
Verbal: If at all possible you should attempt to Distract, Defuse, and Deescalate the situation using your verbal skills. A great book that can help you build this skill is “Verbal Judo.”
Physical: Once the situation goes beyond verbal it will often go physical. Having the ability to stop an assault with a few will placed strikes can end a situation before it goes any further and is an extremely important self-defense skill-set.
Lethal: This is the final stage that should be avoided if at all possible. The better you have the other 3 Domains mastered the better you can avoid this one. Unfortunately most untrained people get scared, overreact, and jump straight to lethal which can land them in trouble.
The Defensive Measures Empty Hand System was originally developed for Military and Law Enforcement (mainly at the Special Teams level) by Martial Arts Hall of Famer Hank Hayes. Hank recognized that the men and women that keep this Country safe don't have the time to spend years in a Dojo to develop skills that may or may not work out in the streets. They need results NOW!!
The Defensive Measures Combatives System is brutally simple and highly effective on most people, in most situations, most of the time.

1 - The Anatomy of a Knife Attack -Edged Weapon Defense
The knife attack is one of the most brutally savage and violent attacks you can encounter. There are many martial arts and fighting styles that say they have the answer to defend against a knife wielding attacker... however most, if not all, come up way short when faced with the realities of a real world committed attack.
Since 1998 ISP’s parent company, NLB Tactical, has built its reputation on training Military and Law Enforcement Units (mainly at the Special Teams level) how to survive and take down real world threats of being attacked with a knife. NLB Tactical was founded by Martial Arts Hall of Famer Hank Hayes and originally centered around his invention of the "No Lie Blade" which is a training marking blade designed to give immediate feedback for your knife defense technique and see if it worked, or didn't.
The ISP Anatomy of a Knife Attack course is the same training we give to the Military and Law Enforcement Units only without the yelling, screaming, and high pressure testing evolutions and is tailored, not watered down, for the everyday person. These techniques have been pressure tested in real word operational environments, on multiple continents, and have been proven time and time again to work!!
If you truly take your self-protection seriously this course is a must!!!

Summary
Having a gun is only a part of your self-protection skill-set and system. It is by no means the complete package. Taking a more complete 360 degree approach is far more advantageous. Not every problem can be solved with a gun and just because you have a gun does not mean that you are armed. The mind is the final weapon… all else is supplemental!!
