Carrying a firearm is about being prepared for the worst-case scenario. But what happens if your gun malfunctions, runs out of ammo, or gets knocked out of your hands? Some gun owners solve this problem by carrying a backup gun. Is it a smart move or unnecessary weight? Let’s look at the pros and cons.
Why Carry a Backup Gun?
Backup guns are generally smaller, more compact firearms.
A backup gun (BUG) is exactly what it sounds like; a second firearm carried in case your primary weapon fails, runs dry, or becomes inaccessible. They’re usually carried in ankle holsters, pocket holsters, or even deep concealment options like belly bands or underarm holsters. Here’s why some people swear by it:
The best guns can malfunction. A backup gives you another option.
If an attacker takes or disables your primary weapon, you’re not out of the fight.
In a life-or-death scenario, drawing a second gun can be quicker than reloading your first.
If your dominant hand is injured, a backup gun in an alternate location can save your life.

Why a Backup Gun Might Not Be for You
Carrying a second gun won’t work for everyone. There are trade-offs:
Adding another firearm to your every day carry (EDC) setup means extra weight and space.
It might involve slower draw times. If you can’t access it quickly, is it really useful?
There’s more training time required because you need to practice drawing, shooting, and handling malfunctions with both guns.
Carrying multiple guns may complicate legal situations, depending on where you live.
Or it simply may not be for you.
Summary
A backup gun isn’t a necessity for everyone, but it’s an option worth considering. If you carry one, train with it. Make sure it’s reliable, easy to access, and something you can shoot well.
